When respected financial minds like Mohamed El-Erian say that a particular type of investment should occupy a 10% allocation in your portfolio, it's probably worth listening. When the recommendation is an investment that most investors probably don't have a single dime in, then it's probably worth considering even more.
The investment in question is private equity. There's probably a reason that most people don't have private equity in their portfolio. It's a notoriously difficult market for the typical investor to gain access to (unless you have somewhere in the neighborhood of $1 million or more to invest). Direct investment into private companies is still challenging, but now there are ways to get pretty close. And it won't cost you millions of dollars to get your foot in the door.
