Investors should be well aware of the dangers that come with chasing yields. In a vacuum, a dividend yield may look fantastic but a look under the sheets can reveal a great deal of ugliness. Case in point - the Yorkville High Income MLP ETF (NYSEARCA:YMLP).
MLP ETFs in recent years have gained much interest for their high yields. While it's not unusual for the typical MLP ETF to yield 4-5% or even more, funds like Yorkville focus on small and micro cap MLPs or those with a riskier profile and thus provide investors with a higher yield. That helps boost the yield but also elevates the potential risk for shareholders. Yorkville's current yield sits at just a hair over 13% but that tells just a small part of the story.
